Changelog

Every release, in order.

What shipped in every Panehop release. The app shows the same notes when it updates.

0.1.16

New

One addition, so a new version does not go unnoticed:

  • A heads-up when there's a new version: Panehop checks for updates once a day, and until now the only sign one was waiting was a small dot on the menu-bar icon. It now also sends a Panehop notification. Click it to see what is new and install. The first time an update is due, macOS asks whether Panehop may send notifications; if you say no, the dot and the "Update to Panehop…" menu item still work as before.

0.1.15

Bug fix

One fix, for lists that would not let go:

  • Ghost windows are gone: an app that crashed or was force-quit could keep its windows in the list indefinitely, offering to switch you to something that no longer existed. Panehop relied on macOS telling it an app had quit, and that message does not always arrive when an app dies abruptly. It now checks for itself whether an app is still running, so its windows leave the list within a moment of it going.

0.1.14

New

A small change to how the list reads:

  • Apps with no open windows sit under their own heading: they already sank to the bottom of the list; now a "No open windows" divider marks where they start, so the windows you are actually switching between read as one group and the rest stays out of the way. The divider appears in the switcher, in search and in the sidebar, and only when those apps really are grouped at the end — set the filter to "Show" and they stay in place among your windows, undivided, as before.

0.1.13

Bug fix

One fix, for anyone who runs apps from the menu bar:

  • Apps that hide their Dock icon now show up: Panehop only followed apps with a Dock icon, so anything running from the menu bar was invisible to it — 1Password, CleanShot X, Stream Deck and others, even with an ordinary window open right in front of you. 1Password was the worst case: it hides its Dock icon whenever its window is not on the Space you are looking at, so it would appear while you were on its Space and vanish as soon as you left. Panehop now also follows an app when the window server says it owns a real window, so these appear in the switcher, in search and in the sidebar like anything else. Menu-bar apps with no window of their own stay out of your list.

0.1.12

Bug fix

One fix, for anyone who keeps windows spread across Spaces:

  • Windows on other Spaces stop disappearing: some apps — 1Password, Microsoft Teams and other Electron-based apps — hide their windows from macOS's accessibility layer whenever the window sits on a Space you are not looking at. Panehop has a fallback for exactly that, but it was asking the window server a question those windows never answered, so it concluded the window was gone and dropped it. The app then vanished from the switcher, from search and from the sidebar until you visited its Space. It now asks the right question, and the window stays in the list wherever it is.

0.1.11

Bug fix

Panehop was changing a keyboard shortcut it had no business changing:

  • It stops switching off a shortcut it doesn't need: if your search chord is ⌃Space, Panehop takes over macOS's input-source shortcut while it runs — but it assumed that shortcut was still on its factory keys. If you had moved input-source switching somewhere else, Panehop switched off "Select the previous input source" on every launch, over a conflict that did not exist. It now checks what those shortcuts are actually bound to.
  • …and stops switching one back on: an input-source shortcut you had unchecked yourself could be re-enabled by Panehop. It now only restores shortcuts it actually took over.

0.1.10

Bug fix

A pass over how the window list is put together — five fixes:

  • Your settings now apply everywhere: "Do not show" rules and "Show windows from" were only being honored by the sidebar — the ⌘Tab switcher and the search panel ignored both. They no longer do.
  • Panehop remembers your order: recent-window order used to reset every time Panehop restarted, so the first switch after logging in fell back to an alphabetical list. It now persists, and an app that quits and reopens keeps its place instead of dropping to the bottom.
  • No more duplicate rows in search: a window you had taught a shortcut to could appear twice in the results, and several windows of a taught app came back in reverse order.
  • Fast Search raises the window you picked: if the window list changed while you were holding the modifier, the highlighted row and the window actually switched to could drift apart.
  • Typing in the ⌘Tab switcher is smarter: it now uses — and teaches — the same learned shortcuts as the search panel, so the same query gives the same answer in both. Results also arrive with less work per keystroke.

0.1.9

Faster

One fix, for anyone who unplugs an external display:

  • Smoother switching across Spaces: switching to a window several Spaces away used to slide through every Space in between, one at a time — most noticeable after unplugging external displays, when all your Spaces sit on the laptop screen. Panehop now jumps straight to the target in a single step whenever that saves hops.

0.1.8

New

Two things daily drivers asked for:

  • Apps without windows stay reachable: Finder with nothing open, or Mail after you closed its last window, used to vanish from ⌘Tab. They now appear as one item (at the bottom by default) and switching to them does what a Dock click does. Choose show / bottom / hide in Settings → Panel.
  • Numbered rows: the first nine rows carry a number; press it to switch straight there while ⌘Tab is up, or ⌘1–9 in search. Turn it off under Settings → Panel → Item labels.

0.1.7

Faster

One fix, and a noticeable one:

  • Faster switching to other Spaces: switching to a window on another Space took about a second in 0.1.6. It now completes in a fraction of that, roughly 0.2 seconds for a neighbouring Space and a little more for Spaces further away.

0.1.6

New

Quieter updates, and two small fixes:

  • Quieter updates: when a new version is ready, Panehop no longer opens a window behind whatever you're doing. A small dot appears on the menu bar icon and the menu offers "Update to Panehop…". Checking manually works as before.
  • Panehop's own icon in the menu bar: replaces the placeholder symbol.
  • The scrollbar no longer runs across the highlighted row in the switcher.

0.1.5

Bug fix

The overlapping-menu-bar bug, fixed at the root:

  • Fixed: overlapping menu bars: switching to a window on another Space could leave two apps' menus drawn on top of each other until you clicked something. Earlier releases patched the symptom. This one removes the cause: Panehop now lets macOS perform the Space change itself, so the menu bar always shows the app you switched to.
  • Switching to a window whose app is slow to respond (some Electron apps on other Spaces) now completes the switch instead of stopping halfway.

0.1.4

Polish

Polish, everywhere you look:

  • A more polished switcher: roomier rows with bigger icons, a proper selection pill, keyboard hints drawn as real keycaps in the footer, and a taller search field that shows your search shortcut. The scrollbar no longer overlaps window titles.
  • No more titles popping in: window titles and app icons are ready before the panel opens. Nothing loads in after you press ⌘Tab.
  • The search panel is wider, so long window titles fit.
  • The install disk image now says what to do: double-click Panehop and it installs itself.

0.1.3

Bug fixes

Two fixes from daily-driving:

  • Fixed the overlapping menu bar: after switching, the menu bar could show two apps' menus drawn over each other until you clicked something. Switches now hand activation over to the new app the way macOS expects, so the menu bar swaps cleanly.
  • Search closes the way you'd expect: Esc clears what you typed, Esc again closes; clicking any other window closes it too.

0.1.2

Crash fix

A quick, important fix:

  • Fixed a crash: when switching to a window on another Space. If 0.1.1 ever vanished on you mid-switch, this was it. Sorry, and thank you for the crash reports.
  • Smoother first run: setup is now one guided flow (install, permission, ⌘Tab choice, first switch) with a step indicator, instead of separate dialogs.
  • Reinstalling over a running Panehop: now just works: the old copy quits itself and the new one takes over.

0.1.1

New + fixes

Fixes from the first wave of feedback, and the sidebar makes its debut:

  • New: Sidebar (opt-in): an auto-hiding per-display window dock. Turn it on in Settings.
  • New: onboarding: Panehop now asks before taking over ⌘Tab, and can start at login.
  • Fixed: switching could leave two apps' menus overlapping in the menu bar, and didn't play nicely with Stage Manager. Switches now register with macOS the native way.
  • Fixed: Fast Search no longer takes over a live input-source shortcut (⌃Space and friends) without asking.
  • Improved: panel hover selection and footer; smarter tracking of untitled dialogs and closed windows.
  • Improved installer: the disk image is readable in dark mode, and Panehop offers to move itself to Applications if launched from the disk image.
  • Crash reporting to help us fix problems. Anonymous by construction, and you can opt out in Settings → General.
